Travertine: An Ancient Stone Used in Your Home

Travertine is a form of terrestrial limestone deposited around mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties. In the US, the most well-known place for travertine formation is Yellowstone National Park, where the geothermal areas are rich in travertine deposits.

Travertine is one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture. It is commonly used for indoor home/business flooring, outdoor patio flooring, spa walls and ceilings, façades, and wall cladding. The lobby walls of the modernist Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago are made of travertine.

Travertine’s high porosity makes it light in weight for its strength, gives it good thermal and acoustic insulating properties, and makes it relatively easy to work. Dense travertine makes excellent decorative stone when polished.

Paving the Way

The Romans built the Coliseum out of travertine. If they had properly maintained it using our Stone & Grout Sealer, the building might still be standing today. Travertine is a porous surface and can stain easily. It has many ridges where dirt can settle. When you seal it, it becomes much easier to clean and will keep it looking beautiful.

How to Clean Your Travertine

Travertine can have many textures, from highly polished to rough and natural. No matter the finish, our Stone-eez Natural Stone Cleaner can keep it looking like the day it was installed.

Do it Right and Keep it Sealed Up Tight

Keeping your floor and grout sealed, especially after a restorative cleaning, will help keep dirt and grime away. Using Grout & Natural Stone Tile Sealer pour a generous amount of the sealer on the floor and spread it out, making sure to get it in all of the nooks and crannies. Using a soft, cushiony pad will allow you to gently press the sealer onto the surface so that it gets in all the grooves and grout lines. Remember this sealer is good for the tiles and grout lines! Let it sit for three to five minutes and then wipe up the excess. Voila! Your beautiful travertine is on the path to last for centuries. And for daily maintenance be sure to use Daily-eez - Neutral PH Maintenance Cleaner.

Count on Clean-eez for rock-solid advice about how to clean your surfaces.
